  • Max Magazine trailer: weekend watch

Posted in Fashion / Fashion blog / Fashion photo shoots / Fashion pictures

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when it happened, but at some stage trailers stopped being just for films. These days books have trailers, websites have trailers, magazine issues have trailers. This is by no means a complaint: it’s a trend born of the Internet, the ability to spread videos with viral ease, and they’re the perfect way to generate excitement and anticipation around any launch. Max Magazine does it well, releasing this little video to announce their upcoming June launch and giving us a preview of the issue’s 5 main editorials.

  • The Simple Leather Sandal: Your Summertime LBD of Footwear
Here in SoCal, we’re super spoiled with a devoted sun that shines down most days of summer (June gloom be damned!). Pretty lucky, right? And it’s a good thing, too, with all of the outdoor activities (catch our L.A.-area camping guide?) rounding out our to-do lists. Wasting time and those precious rays changing outfits and worrying about what to pack? Not us. When the temp heats up, we prefer an M.O. of low maintenance, but never low on luxury (natch).

True, we have our trusty LBD’s and LBW’s to rely on. But this summer we’re making a serious argument for the simple leather sandal (henceforth, the SLS — do you think we can we make it sartorially viral?).

Imagine it: On the beach with cut-offs and cover-ups, paired with floaty frocks for daytime shopping trips, worn with simple and modern sheath dresses for night — the SLS is a trés chic addition, non? High on comfort, with go-anywhere-style in spades, this must-have shoe is like the flip flop’s sleek, sophisticated, yet still comfy cousin. If you pick a style in a smooth tan or lush black leather, this just might be the only shoe you need all season. Click through to see our own wishlist of anti-flip-flop frontrunners right here.

  • Street Style: A Comfy-Casual Look For Summer Nights
    Nina-Young-(student)_TracyWangembed

As the weather heats up, layers tend to come off and skirts tend to get shorter. But that doesn’t always have to be the case. When we saw Nina Young’s covered-up yet still summery look, we knew it was not only comfortable, but also a great evening outfit for when the sun goes down on summer nights. Yes, it still gets chilly! With light fabric, layers are still a great option and allow you to play with pieces of your wardrobe from every season. Plus, we love the idea of using a maxi skirt as a laid-back option to help transition from morn to midnight. And, it’s soooo easy to pack (weekend getaways, anyone?). We think get-up is boho but still styled to perfection. But what say you? A little too hippy or awesomely understated? Tell us in the comments below!

  • What Fashion’s "Ethnic" Prints Are Really Called
You’ve seen them crowding the racks at stores and draping the bodies of some of the most well-dressed ladies around… but, what do you actually call them? You know what you shouldn’t call them: the hyper-general African print, the offensive “tribal” print, the catch-all “ethnic” print…not okay.

Lumping all similar prints into one group or referring to them by a descriptor rather than their real names is just as silly as calling jeans “blue pants,” or a Le Smoking a “black suit.” So, we’re here to provide a little vocabulary lesson. From ubiquitous Dutch Wax prints to the traditional, striated Ganado print, we’ve got the real names and stories behind these historic prints. Read on and banish the term “ethnic print” from your lexicon, once and for all.

Believe it or not, it’s been 30 years — an entire generation — since GUESS’ original, three-zip Marilyn jean put their mark on fashion forever. To celebrate, the brand is going back to its roots with a new campaign featuring the star of its classic ads, Claudia Schiffer, and releasing a limited-edition line of updates on their iconic pieces. To join in the festivities, we snapped 30 of our favorite fashionable friends wearing the vintage-inspired 30th anniversary collection and asked them what GUESS means to them. Thirty women, 30 days, 30 sexy years of GUESS.

For more about the collection and GUESS’ 30th birthday, go to www.GUESS1981.com.

    Name: Shea Marie

Ten-Second Bio: Shae is the fashion expert, host, and blogger behind CheyenneMeetsChanel.com.

Favorite ‘80s memory: “Well, I don’t think I was old enough to appreciate it at the time, but Madonna in the ’80s was pretty awesome.”

Favorite GUESS memory: “Being born in ’87, I was quite young in the ’80s, but I remember Christmas shopping with my mom at a very young age and her saying that my older cousins only wanted to wear GUESS. As I got a little older, I always got their hand-me-downs.”

Posted in Fashion / Clothing & Accessories / Fashion blog / Fashion collections

Never one to rest on its laurels, ASOS.com have just launched ASOS Salon – a range that offers vintage-style pieces at a higher level of quality and detail to ASOS’s everyday offerings. The launch collection nods gently to the likes of Valentino and Missoni with “beautiful appliqué finishes, feminine floral shapes and a palette of sugary, ice-cream shades shot through with bold pops of neon color.” At this stage the shoe and accessory offering is limited but includes a collection of patent T-Bar shoes in spring colours.

  • Calling out softly

Posted in Fashion / Fashion blog / Fashion pictures / Street style

You witness a lot of peacocking at fashion weeks; sometimes it suits the personality, sometimes a look has been obviously composed in order for its wearer to get photographed. When it’s the latter, the pieces used to create a look are usually loud and large. Not so with this look.

Snapped at London fashion week‘s Somerset House, a sheer hem, a layering of fur and studded clutch came together for a look that not only garnered attention but also positive comments.

  • 8 Runway-Inspired Items For A Not-So-Basic Black And White Abode
Let’s put it this way: We’ve been spending a lot of time on Pinterest, searching the term “cabana.” But, in truth, we don’t even have a pool. That doesn’t mean we can’t dream, right? Amid exploring countless color-soaked boards, we knew we’d found the perfect combination of summery and beach chic when we caught wind of this fresh Spring ’12 Moschino look. It’s the ideal inspiration for our fantasy poolside chill chamber!

But intersecting organic down-to-earth neutrals with streaks of black and white doesn’t have to be confined to our pipe-dream pool house. This graphic palate is also a great foundation for one’s current L.A. interior to keep things feeling warm, light, and just dressed up enough all year long.

The key is to pare things down with neutral weaves and kick it up with just the right amount of sleek ebony to keep things feeling crisp. So, if when that fantasy hilltop Mid-Century modern becomes a reality, your décor will be prepped and ready to move right in!

  • McQ leaves England, heads West

Posted in Fashion / Clothing & Accessories / Fashion blog / Fashion collections

Gone is the traditional English foundation, the tartan and lace; for spring 2012 McQ by Alexander McQueen is seemingly Texas bound.

Sarah Burton’s designs maintain their femininity through strictly cinched-in waists, as is customary, but this time she adds a 50s rockabilly meets Western flavour. Metal-tipped collars, ribbon neck ties, embroidery, and denim all play a part in this cowgirl scene, smashed together with modern touches like perforated leather – or metallic leathers that are licked with flames and look set for a Vegas stage.

  • Like, WHOA: Joey Lawrence Bares It All, & It’s Not For A Movie Role
Okay, we’re not going to lie: When we first read this, we thought someone was pulling a fast one on us. The Blossom heartthrob (he’ll never live that down), Joey Lawrence, is hitting the stage — and not quite in the way we’d expect. Let’s just say, this is a slightly more risqué, no-holds-barred performance. He’s strapping on a bowtie, stripping down, and joining the Las Vegas Chippendales gang. And just after getting us all amped with that Old Navy Blossom reunion, too! Who knew this would be his next endeavor?

According to Chippendales, Lawrence will be completely nude — “the whole nine yards,” if you will. We honestly thought this was a prank, so we headed over to trusty IMDb to peep any new, potentially stripper-themed roles. Nope, nothing lined up. So, why is Joey baring it all? We’re still scratching our heads about this one. We think this warrants a resounding “Whoa,” no? (Daily News)

  • Hump, Marry, Kill TV Checklist: The Week I Tried to Watch The Bachelorette
    hmk

Photo: Courtesy of Bill Gray/HBO; Photo: Courtesy of Ali Goldstein/NBC; Photo: Courtesy of Craig Sjodin/ABC

Hump: Before I get to my very first foray into what appears to be America’s favorite non-singing-based reality show, I must address my new favorite character on television: Sue Wilson from Veep. Played with no-nonsense aplomb by Sufe Bradshaw, who is gorgeous enough to be a model (Wait, let me IMDB her…is she a model? Okay, she’s not a model, but she does volunteer for Humanity for the Homeless. Swoon.), Sue — the vice president’s executive assistant — doesn’t take any shit from anyone, including the V.P. She gets more accomplished in five minutes than I do in oh, five months. She can cut down anyone with a simple look, and even the Vice President lets Sue put her in her place.

Here’s how Sue describes her job in the Veep’s office: “The Vice President is the second most important person in the world. I arrange for you to see her. So, in my eyes, that makes me the third most important person in the world. So, you better be nice to me. Or you won’t get to see her. And if you do get to see her, you better be nice to her. Or you won’t get to see her again. The Vice President may forget, but I hold a grudge. And my grudges are nasty.”

I can only dream of making speeches like that. I love you, Sue Wilson. Plus, you’re a stone-cold fox.

Marry: Tonight’s season finale of 30 Rock sealed the deal: I want to grow old with Liz Lemon/Tina Fey. Criss/James Marsden can also be there, I guess. I mean, she’s clearly the funny one with the great job, and he’s the stud building a nursery for their future child (again…where do I fit into this picture?). I guess I can keep our DVR programmed with all the right shows and make tough calls when there are three shows we want to record because — as all TV fanatics know — most DVRs only allow you to record two shows at a time. I could also help find more gems in Sky Mall, to add to Liz’s growing remote-stashing collection. I’d be willing to do that for her if it meant I could be married to the head writer of a comedy show and her gorgeous, dim-witted himbo. Yes…I think we may really have something here.

Kill: I’m sorry, I tried, I really did. I wanted to watch The Bachelorette unironically with hope in my heart that the quasi-widowed, definitely jilted (thanks, Us Weekly and Wikipedia!) Emily Maynard would finally find love for herself and a father for her daughter. But c’mon, those introductions? Where Emily did a slow turn, and the eligible bachelors tried everything from breakdancing (did not realize the producers had a Jersey Shore quota to meet) to presenting Emily with an ostrich egg in hopes of doing something that would differentiate them from the 20-plus other men she was meeting in less than half an hour. To me, it was worse than a blind date and sorority rush combined. And that guy with the helicopter? Stop showing off, Mr. Big Stuff. Who do you think you are? (He’s the one we’re killing tonight.)

I’m not going to give up yet, though. Not just because I don’t want to feel ridiculously left out during my office’s Tuesday-morning gossip sesh about the previous night’s episode. I have got to see what it is about these shows that piques America’s curiosity and keeps everyone tuning in week after week. Does anyone here know? If so, can you please enlighten me? Also, how does Emily avoid getting the herp when making out with all these dudes? Seriously, help a girl out here.

British Vogue EIC Alexandra Shulman gave a talk in London Wednesday night and the magazine published some of the most interesting takeaways on its own blog–something we can’t imagine ever happening at American Vogue. Apparently, music stars don’t sell magazines:

  • Chloë Sevigny Feels Unattractive In Her Transexual Assassin Costume
In her latest off-the-beaten-track role, Chloë Sevigny plays a pre-op transsexual contract assassin in new TV show Hit & Miss. And, while we all know she’s used to getting into (strange) character, the Opening Ceremony designer may have underestimated the emotional toll of being a fake man. The usually fearless Sevigny says that she actually cried while putting on her prosthetic genitalia each day: “It was weird. I was lonely and I felt really unattractive. I was confused about my desirability — was I desirable? — in having put that on, and having men see me with that on.” But, we’re thinking that this mixed emotion might help her convey some of the incredibly complex emotions her killer character is going through. Or at least feel better in her own skin, off camera. What do you think? Do you feel for Chloë’s struggle or think she should suck it up for the sake of the art? (Gawker)

  • Rad Or Bad: Would You Wear A Rash Guard Off The Beach?
If you’ve never been surfing before, here’s a quick fashion lesson: A rash guard is a top worn by itself during the summertime or even underneath a wetsuit during colder months to (three guesses as to what it does… two guesses… one…) guard from abrasion rashes caused by the surfboard. Sometimes embedded with SPF and made with breathable, quick-drying fabric, the rash guard is an indispensable piece of surfwear that is getting more fashion-forward by the season.

In fact, it’s so cute that we’re considering wearing our own rash guards even when the only wave we’re riding is a particularly bumpy subway commute. Super lightweight and free of those tell-tale signs of most athletic-wear — like zippers, sheen, and mesh — these skin-tight shirts would look (and feel) extra cool with full skirts or cut-offs, or even under blazers at work.

But…are we alone in this? You probably wouldn’t wear you spinning shorts out of the gym or your soccer cleats on the street, so, would you ever considering taking your rash guard off duty?

  • The Odd Couple: Snoop Dogg & Karl Lagerfeld Team Up For A Music Vid

Truth be told, it’s rare to find us actually shocked when Uncle Karl does or says something zany. It’s kind of regular practice now, no? Sure, we’ll raise an eyebrow here, or gasp a little there (whether he’s designing helicopters or spewing controversial convo) — but to make us stand up and say WTF? — well, that’s a whole different story. But, we’re going to hand it to the guy, this time we’re wowed.

The Chanel creative director, along with Snoop Dogg, made a star-studded appearance in a music video. All we can ask is … why? Apparently, French singer Jean-Roch rounded up both Karl and Snoop for a can’t-miss cameo in his video (Snoop actually waxes pretty poetic), “Saint-Tropez.” And the Kaiser went for it.

But we’re going to be straight with you: This is the best thing we’ve seen all week. It’s a bit of a mind warp to see the two totally different dudes in the same scene. • Benetton’s Fall Collection Puts It Back On The Map, Better Than Ever
Well, hello old friend. It was only a few months ago that we found ourselves reminded of United Colors of Benetton — thanks to a few lip-locked politicians — but that was only the start of the conversation. Among the designers and brands that we already look to for our wardrobe staples, we may have to make some room for the brand we’be been familiar with since childhood. Because it’s making a welcome comeback.

With the help of newly appointed creative director, You Nguyen, United Colors of Benetton’s fall ’12 collection is filled with casual separates in light knits and classic denim. But, what really stands out is (naturally) is the creative use and mixture of color. In its latest lookbook, Benetton has really drawn us in with an imaginative and unapologetic pairings of brights, neutrals, pastels, florals, polka dots, stripes, varying fabrics (the list goes on), that may just inspire you to forget everything you know about looks that “go” and start to think outside to box of possibilities.

We don’t know where all this Benetton boldness has been hiding, but we’re hoping it sticks around. Click through for all the looks from their fall line.

Guys, we love you, but we need to talk. Going out on the town in Chicago is one of our favorite pastimes, but lately we’re noticing a groundswell in the boring boy wardrobe department. The jeans and button-down shirts you’re relying on could be so much more, when styled properly. • How One Little (Fendi) Bag Changed Sex And The City Forever
Most of us associate Sex and the City with labels, labels, labels — Manolo, Jimmy, Dolce…the list goes on. After the second film (and that infamous $10 million wardrobe), it’s easy to forget that the show actually had (relatively) humble beginnings. In Rizzoli’s new book Fendi Baguette, feting the rerelease of six of the Italian house’s iconic arm candy (out June 1), Sarah Jessica Parker describes how the little wardrobe department that could became a veritable treasure trove, thanks to one mini handbag. “In the very beginning, [stylist] Patricia Field and her team had to be industrious and creative with a low budget by getting clothes from thrift stores in order to tell interesting fashion stories,” Parker writes. “At this time, things were inaccessible and out of reach; Fendi was really the first important design house to loan us items, with the baguette handbag being the first.”

  • Sheer Madness: Charlize Theron And Kristen Stewart Play The Matching Game
    rexusa_1044030ao

Sure, we may try to laugh it off, but deep down inside we’re pretty devastated when we’re at a soirée and suddenly a “she stole my look” moment rears its ugly head. So, we can only imagine how Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart felt when they both arrived at the Snow White And The Huntsman premiere donning crazy-similar gowns (uh oh!).

Maybe it was the movie’s dark theme that inspired both gals to opt for long, sheer black dresses — or maybe they planned it. Who knows. We’ll probably never get to the bottom of the matching mystery, but it looks like the ladies had a lovely time, either way. However, we do think this warrants a “who wore it best” poll, no? Have at it — take to the comments and fill us in on whose version of the look you like better.

  • A Recipe For Casual Drama From Jewelry Designer Annika Salame
We’ve been handing out tips on dressing for the evening from some very, very fashionable ladies. Today is no exception as Annika Salame, the gorgeous Swedish designer behind local jewelry brand by boe (check it out why don’t you), offers a few tips on how to bring drama to even the most minimal blue skirt. Enjoy.

    AnnikaSalame

    Annika Salame, Designer, by boe

“My ‘go-to’ outfit right now often involves a raw silk, floor-length, blue skirt I had made locally. Last summer, I wore it with flat gladiator sandals and a white blouse-y T-shirt. For this look, I added a metallic tank from Zadig and Voltaire, and my current obsession, Alexander Wang booties (I wish I could walk around in them every day). I love the floor-length trend — the way you can dress it up or down.

“When I’m going out, I like to start with one dramatic item and use that to build on. It can be an item of clothing, a pair shoes, boots, or an accessory. If I’m in more of a laid-back mood, maybe it will be a vintage Sri Lankan traditional top. If I’m in the mood to look cool, I’ll throw on high-heeled motorcycle boots from Stella McCartney.

“I like to mix textures; silk with knits, silk or knits with leather, silk with jeans. Right now, silk always seems to be in the mix somewhere, but it’s all about a natural balance — it has to feel like ‘me.’

“I usually start with my current basic stack — a by boe wrap bracelet and a leather wrap from Smith and Butler. For this outfit, I added a chunky, vintage bronze bracelet to counter the drape-y fluid shapes of the skirt. If my clothes have very simple lines, I like to add multiple stacks of jewelry. For the combo on my other hand, I’ll stack a silver ring from St. Kilda and the City Ring from by boe. As you might guess, I love picking out jewelry to match my clothes.”

  • Our New Summer Must-Have: A Fruity, Femme Body Wash
    foam-callslide
The last thing you want when it’s hot and sticky outside is a fragrance that’s equally oppressive — the ideal summer scents are always light and subtle, offering up just a whisper of olfactory intrigue. In fact, on some truly steamy days, we just want to smell clean and freshly showered (probably because we feel anything but).

Our new go-to for that just-washed aroma? Soap & Glory’s new Foam Call body wash. The rich, creamy formula lathers up nicely and works well as a shaving cream in a pinch, and the new “Fruitigo” fragrance, with its notes of yuzu, orange oil, green fig, and pomelo, leaves skin lightly scented with a tropical essence. Even though we don’t typically go for fruity fragrances (we’re more the musky-woody type, if you’re asking), we’ve found this one to be pretty irresistible. The best part? It’ll last all summer and it’s a multi-tasker — two things we can really respect in our beauty goodies.

  • Gap Redefines The Classics For Fall & Inspires Us To Plan A Mall Trip
As one of our go-to shops for classic pieces we can always use, Gap doesn’t disappoint with its fall ’12 collection. The line gives us exactly what our wardrobes will need next season (and for not-so-many dollar signs).

Even without former creative director Patrick Robinson at the helm (they’re hiring, people!), Gap still manages to reproduce timeless pieces updated just enough to keep the final effect low-key and no-fuss. You can always count on a striped shirt, a perfect trench coat, on-trend jeans and button-ups for days. But, what stands out most in this lookbook: the surprising new classics (because if Gap is doing them, they’re definitely classic). We’re talking printed cropped pants, the drop-waist denim dress, and loose-fitting boyfriend jeans and khakis. While we don’t want to toot our own horn here, we definitely predicted some of these trends would make it big and Gap, you’ve just confirmed it!

  • The Worst Post-Date Texts We’ve Ever Read (Courtesy Of Williamsburg)
Yikes! Candice, a 31-year old New Yorker went out with a man she met in a Williamsburg bar (red flag number one—kidding!), didn’t love it, and went on with her life — kind of. The date, who showed up to The Avengers wearing a fedora (red flags two and three, respectively) sent some enthusiastic texts soon after, and was kindly brushed off by Candice. However, Mr. Fedora refused to take “no” for an answer. In increasingly rude SMSs, Mr. F escalated from, “I don’t want to waste my time,” to the classic “your loss,” to an outrageous message “meant for someone else” calling Candice a “5.5 out of 10″ and bragging about another promising date with “Nancy.” Candice didn’t respond, resulting in Mr. F letting her know the message was “not about [her] at all” and that he hopes she is well.

Naturally, Candice sent screen shots of the offending texts to Gawker (thank you technology!) and now we can all get a virtual taste of the wonders and perils of NYC dating. But really, what are we supposed to do with the other six days

  • How To Get Great Legs: 5 Tips We Swear By
    legs-tips-makeup-exercise

We’re loathe to admit it (we’ve been neglecting our squat thrusts at the gym), but it looks like summer ’12 is going to be the season of the leg. Sure, there’s always been lots of skin on display in the warmer months, but after Angelina Jolie’s thigh-high slit at the Oscars, and Anja Rubik’s pelvis peep show at the Met Ball, it’s clear that designers are upping their game and bringing legs front and center.

Great news if you hit the genetic lottery and have mile-long stems, but for those of us with less-than-lengthy limbs, the thought of revealing them can cause major dread. While it’s easy to disguise your legs in the colder months with slimming and lengthening black tights, there’s nowhere to hide come summer.

But fortunately, there are a few sneaky tricks you can employ to make your legs look, well, leggier. We asked a panel of experts to dish their secrets to getting your gams in prime condition for summer’s tiniest short shorts. Read on for their best tips, and get ready to step out with confidence.

  • Say What: Does This One Direction Member Have The Moves Like Jagger?
Excuse us for being slightly tardy to the party on this one, but we’re all abuzz after learning that Richard Branson’s production company is releasing a flick about the rock relationship of the century. Exile On Main Street will highlight the tumultuous times that transpired between music legends Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones. We’re jumping out of our chairs just thinking about catching the Jagger-Richards feud from start to finish — and are eagerly anticipating the release date. We caught wind of the news when it was recently announced that One Direction’s Harry Styles is up for the role of Jagger.

Sure, the British boy band is blowing up the charts right now, and Styles actually kinda-sorta resembles Mick, but is he the next Jagger? We’re not entirely sold (after all, those are mighty big shoes to fill). We personally think none other than Andrew Garfield could do the role justice. But, hey that’s just us. What about Keith? Obviously, Johnny Depp would play an older version, but who could rep the guitarist’s wild and wacky ways as a young’un? Emile Hirsch? Jamie Bell? We could go on for days. • U.K. Style Plus Peruvian Craftsmanship Equals One Hot Miami Brand
Okay, pull out your maps for this one: Pitusa’s beachy basics come from the mind of a London-raised designer, are rendered in colorful, fair-trade fabrics from Peru, and claim residence here in Miami. This means, if you were counting, Pitusa can cite its origin in three continents, but designer Clara Lago has chosen the 305 for the main base of her line’s operations. With bright, warm weather-ready separates and maxi-dresses, the line possesses a bevy of influences, from London street-style to Peruvian-inspired “kimonos.”

The young ingenue (Clara is only 24) sent us over her most recent lookbook, which trades in Miami sun for a dramatically dark and foreboding sky. Against the gray and stormy backdrop, each of her colorful pieces get an extra pop (though, not like they needed it, with all the neon and DayGlo detailing, already). Click through to check out the emerging label!

  • Bewitching: 7 Blingy Body Pieces That’ll Cast A Spell On You
Maybe it’s the fantastical plot twists on HBO’s Game of Thrones, or perhaps just lingering Coachella-fever that has us pining for spindly, sultry, bohemian body jewels. Whatever the cause, we’ve started imagining these enchanting chains — a whole range of understated hand adornments, heavy-metal shoulder toppers, and armor-like chest pieces — starring in our spring and summer wardrobes.

Layered over a basic tee and paired with washed denim for a day of errands, worn atop a wispy dress for date night, or layered underneath, well, anything, these body adornments promise to add a kick of Black Magic Woman sex appeal to whatever you’re rocking. Not down with the heavier armor? Fair enough, but we’ve got cascading ear cuffs and delicate hand pieces that are fit for a California goddess on, just for you. Ready to see what we mean? • The Coco controversy

Posted in Fashion / Fashion blog / Fashion photo shoots / Fashion pictures

Update: you can now view Coco Rocha’s full shoot from Elle Brazil at the gallery.

When you first glance Coco Rocha’s cover for the May 2012 edition of Elle Brazil it’s likely that your reaction is going to be akin to my own: wow. It’s quite the stunning cover. Over Photoshopped in parts to be sure, but all the more dramatic for it. And while some of Coco’s features have received unnecessary attention in Photoshop, it’s the use of the post-production tool elsewhere that has raised eyebrows.

It’s surprising just whose eyebrows they are, however.

  • The Illustrated History Of The Platform Shoe
Before flatforms came the Spice Girls. Before them, disco. And before disco was Salvatore Ferregamo. And before him? The history of the platform shoe is long and storied, and it hasn’t always been about fashion.

The sky-high shoe assisted royals in dodging Medieval muck, gave Greek thespians a much-needed boost on stage, and was actually outlawed at a certain point. Take a little trip with us as we walk (and hobble) through the history of the platform shoe. Trust — you’ll never look at Litas the same way again.

  • Doutzen Kroes On Why Being An Angel Is Just As Awesome As You Think
    60S_280x335
Okay, so we’re not ones for taking sides, but we do have to say that when it comes to Dutch model Doutzen Kroes — she steals our vote as one of the top knockouts in the biz. Don’t get us wrong, we’re big fans of the whole Victoria’s Secret clan, but there is something about Doutzen that we definitely dig. So, when VS held its 7th annual “What Is Sexy?” event and Doutzen hosted — we were over the moon. The “What Is Sexy?” list highlights talent across all spectrums, from sexiest sense of humor (Emma Stone) to sexiest tweeter (Kristen Bell).

And that’s not all. Victoria’s Secret has released a brand-spankin’-new bra, aptly called the Knockout, to coincide with the event. We caught up with the flaxen-haired beauty, who if you ask us, is a gleaming example of the initiative, to talk about her fave L.A. workout spots, traveling, and staying sexy.

What do you think is sexy for L.A. ladies this summer? Any trends you love for West Coast gals vs. the East?

“I love to wear really flowy dresses when I am in L.A., while in NYC I tend to wear a lot of black.”

You were able to regain your flat tummy so quickly after pregnancy. Any words of advice for mommies-to-be?

“Breast feeding really worked for me. I also think working out will definitely help. Plus, it gives you a little time to yourself. My eating habits are pretty healthy, too.”

What’s your favorite outdoor activity, and what’s the ideal L.A. spot for it?

“I love working out hard at Equinox. Plus, whenever I’m in town, I go for a good hike.”

How do you manage to keep your hair so healthy?

“I use a hair mask every so often and coconut oil on my ends.”

How would you compare the new Knockout bra to other brassieres?

“I love that it is wireless and so comfortable, but it still gives you the best lift”

What do you love most about being a Victoria’s Secret Angel?

“We travel to the most beautiful locations in the world, stay in gorgeous hotels, visit stunning beaches, and work with the best hair stylists, makeup artists, and photographers in the world.”

  • Best Rumor Ever: Is A Saved By The Bell Reunion Actually Happening?
We never stopped rooting for Saved By The Bell to make its much-anticipated comeback. It was our all-time fave after-school indulgence back when jellies and crop tops were in the first time (we still want to be Kelly Kapowski circa 1991), and even after it was long off air — we still waited with bated breath to catch it in syndication. Needless to say, the Bayside High gang will forever hold a special place in our hearts. So, whenever we hear even the slightest mumble of a possible reunion, we have trouble containing our excitement.

Well, according to Lark Voorhies, a.k.a. Lisa Turtle, there might just be a SBTB get-together in store for us (fingers crossed). “’We tend to circumvent and come around to this topic quite often, so I think the buzz might catch,” Voorshies said. This is officially the best rumor we’ve heard in ages (aside from that tidbit about the Spice Girls going on tour again, of course).

We can only imagine how the whole thing would pan out. We’d like to think of it as being a character-themed “Where Are They Now” episode. We predict Jessie Spano is probably a lawyer (or president) by now, Zach a tech mogul, Lisa is a fashion designer, and Kelly is hanging at home with a husband (we sure hope she and Zach were able to make that Vegas wedding work…) and kids? But what about AC and Screech? Any thoughts on where those two are now? And more importantly, are you excited as we are about this? Drop us a line in the comments. Inquiring minds want to know. • Why Jessica Simpson (and Any Celeb for that Matter) Won’t Rake in Millions for Their Baby Photos Anymore

    Naked-cover1

People mag has reportedly paid $800,000 to publish the exclusive first photos of Jessica Simpson’s new baby, WWD is reporting. The WWD article also rather snark-ily points out that $800,000 is a relatively low fee for exclusive new baby photos, and that there was no bidding war for photos of baby Maxwell Drew Johnson.

The thing is, those days of paying millions for baby photos–Nicole Richie reportedly got $1 million for her baby photos while Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony were rumored to get up to $6 million for photos of their twins–are long gone.

  • More Than Just Soles: Louboutin Branches Into Beauty
Well, it’s about time! Christian Louboutin has finally announced that his footwear (and handbag) empire will be expanding into the beauty market — meaning it’s only a matter of time before his cult of followers will be able to swipe their tips and lips with shades that resembles their red soles. Partnering with Batallure Beauty LLC, Christian Louboutin Beauté is the first beauty venture for the designer. The designer tells WWD, well, not very much — he has refrained from making detailed comments about the products we can expect from the collection. “Very constructed, quite different and unexpected,” Louboutin told them. Consider us intrigued.

Christian Louboutin Beauté promises to fully align with the luxury feel of the iconic footwear and accessories collections. We’re curious about how his trademark red sole is going to translate here (all-red packaging or perhaps only rouge shades in the line?), but we suppose we’ll just have to wait and see. Having recently celebrated a 20th anniversary, expect the brand to have a just-as-thrilling 21st, as the beauty products will debut in late 2013. (WWD)

Bob Dylan was oh-so-right way back when he declared that “the times they are a-changin’.” Gone are the days of the nuclear family, and that whole 2.2 children thing is but a piece of history. As support for gay marriage gains even more momentum (thanks, Obama!), Little Marc Jacobs’ new, too-cute-for-words tees couldn’t have come at a better time. Each $35 shirt is screen-printed with “If Mom says no, ask Mom” or “If Dad says no, ask Dad” messages as a nod to LGBT families. And get this: ALL of the proceeds will be donated to the Human Rights Campaign, the largest civil rights group advocating for LGBT equality. Happy, happy Mother’s Day! (That’s two, for both moms).

I usually leave both of those things to my nail polish and eye shadow, but Mario Badescu Summer Shine Body Lotion makes adding a little sparkle to your body very appealing. I typically tend to shy away from shimmer body lotions (after all, I’m not [...]

  • Say Hello To Summer With A Mermaid Braid — Here’s The How-To
We always learn such lovely things from Joanna Goddard. This week was no exception, as Jo teamed up with her hair-savvy BFF Caroline to put together a super-easy mermaid braid tutorial. We love the simplicity of this braid — it sounds like it would be so complicated, but in reality it is so basic.

You just divide your hair in two parts, braid each part, and combine them! From a distance it looks like a chunky plait, but when you get close, you can really see the intricacy of the style. Click on over to Cup of Jo to get the full, detailed scoop on how to score this summery braid for your own mane. (Cup of Jo)

  • No, It’s Not A Coloring Book. It’s A Kate Moss Coloring Book
    kate-moss
We’ve finally figured it out: An age-appropriate, and definitely rad, way to disguise our coloring-book addiction as something much more mature. A Kate Moss coloring book, of course.

The iconic model — with a colorful history — gets all washed out in the
Colour Me Good Kate Moss Coloring Book
. Just as it sounds, the stunner takes center stage in this 14-page book in outlined illustrations, ready to be brought to life with a little help from Crayola.

Excuse us for being tardy for the party — we’ll admit the Kate Moss-inspired pastime may not be brand new to the scene — but thanks to a little Pinterest action that caught our eye, we’ve finally tuned in and are officially calling it the perfect Hump Day treat to push us through the rest of the week. Following in the lines of other fashion coloring books, this Books with Style publication comes with all the exciting imagery and none of the luxury price tags.

Don’t think of it as child’s play (warning: not all the pictures are PG-rated), think of it as a way to spark a little creativity, think outside the box, and draw outside the lines…at least, that’s what we’ll tell our friends when they catch us scribbling away.

  • Celebs & Canines Compete In The Ultimate Fashion Face-Off
    ohno

Okay, we’re not going to lie: Sometimes our dogs are the occasional victims of K9 fashion. We can’t help ourselves, they just look too stinkin’ cute sporting frocks and bows. Sigh.

But, if there’s one thing we love almost as much as outfitting our four-legged friends, it’s “Who Wore It Better” polls. Guilty pleasure, anyone? And the fact that someone has combined the two, well, that’s just amazing.

In this over-the-top doggelgangers roundup, you’ll find pups split-screened next to celebs, sporting identical ‘fits — with the option to vote on who rocked it better. Ryan Gosling or a Greyhound? Bar Rafaeli or an English Bulldog? We’ll leave that up to you to decide. But, let’s just say the furry dudes are in the lead. Fashion’s truly gone to the (well-dressed) dogs!

  • This Instagram Camera Is Pretty Much The Best Thing We’ve Seen In Ages
    insta

Snap-happy folks, wait until you get a load of this one. We didn’t think our all-time fave $1 billion photo app, Instagram, could get any cooler, but this new product ups the ante.

It’s no secret that we’re always itching for new ways to display our cool Insta captures. Whether we’re slapping our pics on a pillow or rocking a case littered with images, or even going to the extreme of wearing them on our person, we’re all about showing off our prized moments.
So, obviously, this instant, Instagram-only camera, spotted on lifestyle site Highsnobiety, is so up our alley.

First things first, it’s possibly the cutest little cube we’ve ever seen (it actually looks like a handheld version of the app’s icon), but once you can get over that, you’ll be blown away by the innovative features. Just log in to your account (with the built in Wi-Fi), snap a pic, choose the filter (you know the drill), and woop there it is — a printed version of your pic.

Is this the Polaroid instant camera of 2012? We know, it sounds too good to be true. And it actually is, for now! The product is a mere concept design, courtesy of the forward-thinking peeps at ADR Studio. But, here’s hoping they can execute this baby sometime soon, because we’re head over heels in love. And now that the bait has been dangled, we need this little guy in our lives — the sooner, the better.

  • Street Style, Art Edition: The Crazy-Cool Outfits Fresh From Frieze
When you think art fair you, you might conjure up pieced-together crafts and boho skirts to match — but not at Frieze. After two jaunts over to Randall’s Island, we now know this London import, housed in a giant, serpentine pavilion, is part exhibition, part social scene, part runway, not a surprise considering the galleries showing have a roster of some of the most buzzed-about contemporary artists. That edge-factor attracted an equally edgy crowd, making the isle-we-barely-ever-heard-of a hub of fashion, too. Of course, we braved the ferry to tent style street style snap 11 looks that turned out to be as inspiring as the paintings, photos, sculptures…well you get the point. So maybe all the girls and gals we shot aren’t artists themselves, but they are masters of their own craft. It just so happens that skill-set gets to include strappy knee-high sandals, brightly colored tops, and all-purpose purses. Yep, we can definitely see ourselves investing in pieces like these. Oh, and that Jenny Holzer, too.

  • Pippa Middleton Might be Moving to NYC

    Getty

Pippa Middleton may be the latest British socialite to pack her bags and leave London for NYC. The reason: unwanted attention from paparazzi and maybe also the French police following her Paris gunslinging incident. According to Grazia, she’s been “notably absent from London’s party scene” and after briefly considering, and ruling out, a move to Paris, has expressed interest in moving to our fair city.

  • Warmth and sensuality

Posted in Fashion / Fashion blog / Fashion photo shoots / Fashion pictures

I can’t count the number of times I’ve used the word ‘auteur’ with reference to Vivienne Mok; and it still holds true with each shoot of hers we encounter. The fact is that Mok’s shoots, in all their thematic and aesthetic cohesion, tend to fall into two categories: the soft, sweet, and innocent, or the sensual and deeply erotic. But for Mok the line between the two is uncommonly fine. Any work, at any given time, can be firmly in one category and yet somehow just inches away from drifting into the other.

  • Guys, If You Can Only Buy One Pair Of Oxford Wingtips…
    mcpherson-1

…Yeah, make it these little numbers by Johnston & Murphy. See, we all need a pair of these babies kicking around somewhere in our wardrobes — a shoe with enough detail that it draws a few eyes, but isn’t fuzzy or frilly. This guy — The McPherson by name — is a more relaxed take on the classic oxford wingtip thanks to its camel suede coloring and texture. It’s just the sort of thing that can bridge a look from one scenario to the next — dressing up, say, shorts without socks, or dressing down a full suit. Oh, and as opposed to so many of its ilk, this model doesn’t come with a hard leather sole, meaning unlike those poor schlubs down on Wall Street, you can actually walk a few blocks without having to call a car service. Of course, no one’s saying you have to buy just one pair of wingtips…they also come in off-white suede and tan Italian calfskin. To see the new kicks in action, check out J&M’s doc-style video, which features a fresh update on the heritage brand, with real-life NYC models wearing ‘em in, including professional surfer/perennial stud Johnny Knapp and animated TV creator Robert Scull. Needless to say, we’re already sold.

Johnston & Murphy McPherson wingtips, $175, available at Johnston & Murphy, 520 Madison Avenue (between 53rd and 54th streets); 212-527-2342.

    Photo/Video: Courtesy Johnston & Murphy.
